Tours for Free (and Almost-Free)
While
there are a variety of recreational opportunities, shopping areas, restaurants,
and sights to see within the city and in adjoining towns, Linthicum’s primary
attractions are places that are historical in nature.
The
Benson-Hammond House, built around 1820, is one of the last existing farmhouses
from a period when local farming was a booming industry and is open to the
public. Still fully-furnished with period pieces, it also serves as a museum
where tours are available. It also features a collection of dozens of dolls
from all over the world. This handicapped-accessible museum is the current home
of the Ann Arundell County Historical Society.
The Clara
National Historic Site pays tribute to the life of American Red Cross founder
Clara Barton. This house museum once served as the Red Cross headquarters and
warehouse. It was from within this house that Clara Barton formed American Red
Cross relief work for victims of war, calamities, and disasters. The site is
shown via a guided tour with no admission charge.
The
Historical Electronics Museum offers its visitors free access to the different
electronic inventions that have contributed much to shape the country and the
entire world. Both kids and adults will discover the various types of
electronic devices that people used in the days before the iPad. Learn all
about these marvels of invention, from telegraph and television to cell phones
and satellites.
