The first
time I decided to create a page for my client I literally had no clue what I
was getting myself in to. And I’m sure this is how it is for every new comer
out there. Before this I had only just made some very small changes to a few
existing pages and the way I saw it creating a Wikipedia page wasn’t going to
be that much of a problem. But I can’t tell you how wrong I was.
Creating a
Wikipedia page is anything but an easy task. It requires you to have a proper
command on English language, the subject you are writing on and many other
thingsthat you never really know till you get in to this field. It took me
endless working hours and hundreds of drafts to figure out a fool proof method
of going on about creating a Wikipedia page. But it’s not just about creating a
Wikipedia page, is it? You want the page you are working on to be a part of the
Wikipedia collection and that can only happen if your page gets approved.
Why do people create
Wikipedia pages?
Now, there
are many reasons why people want to create pages on Wikipedia. As we all know
that Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that considered to be the largest
collection of information ever. The topics covered on this platform cover
everything a human brain can think of. The pages on Wikipedia can be written
and edited by anyone at any time.
Wikipedia page creators usually create
pages for the platform to provide trustworthy and reliable information that
is backed by authentic sources. Other major reasons to create a Wikipedia page
other than providing information are advancements in technology, non-existing
topics and about people who are famous and are notable having a considerable
number of achievements. Wikipedia pages are also being created to act as tools
for businesses to market their products, brands and themselves by creating
awareness amongst the target market and providing information that is based on
facts alone and staying away from any kind of promotions.
Steps to create a
Wikipedia page
After
spending a considerable time in writing for Wikipedia pages I have come up with
an easy way to write for a Wikipedia page. I have broken down the lengthy and
difficult process in to small steps to make which are easy to follow. If you
are someone who is looking for a more detailed account on how to create a
Wikipedia page than you can always get the details from Wikipedia’s help pages.
This article is mainly focusing on problems that I faced as a beginner.
Step # 1:The first step that I would suggest to
my readers for creating their own Wikipedia pages is that first they should
first try editing for other pages. You know, starting small. Making small
changes in other different pages and articles will you understand the writing
style of the page and you can learn from this experience.
Step # 2:The second step is very simple. All
you have to do is create an account for yourself before you even think of
creating your page on Wikipedia. Register yourself on Wikipedia and I strongly suggest
that you use your real identity so that you can make a reputation for yourself
with time.
Step # 3:Ok, so now you have an account on
Wikipedia under your real name. The next step would be to choose an appropriate
topic. By saying appropriate topic I mean here that something that is not
already existing on Wikipedia and something that meets the notability criteria
of the platform. Believe it or not there are many pages and articles that do
not make it through the review process due to the reason that the topic was not
meeting the notability criteria.
Step # 4:Once chosen an appropriate topic the
now being the writer you need to do your research on the chosen topic. You need
to gather all the information regarding your chosen topic and make sure about
the authenticity about the information that you will be providing about the
information you’re providing. Research all the facts that you think are going
to make your topic more informative and be very thorough when conducting your
research.
Step # 5: Write your article and make sure you
are using an unbiased tone when providing information on your page. Wikipedia
is a platform solely providing fact not opinions. Make sure your content and
writing style adheres to the policies and guidelines laid down by the platform.
Failing to adhere to these policies increase the likelihood of your pages
getting disapproved.
Step # 6:Once you are done writing your
content make sure you check and review your work critically before you submit
your work for review.
