Agesage: It's Not as Difficult as You Think

I'm sure you've heard about Agesage before. Agesage is a popular Japanese book-to-visual novel series. Agesage has been produced into TV anime, manga, games, action figures of the characters…well done if you are aware of just one thing out of those. Even I have heard about Agesage once or twice even though I don't follow these kinds of drama CDs/books/games etc that much. However, I stopped being an Agesage fan after hearing this shocking news recently. On February 13th 2012 , it was announced by Agesage's publishing company, MF Bunko J , that Agesage would be censored from February 21st 2012 onwards. Agesage was supposed to be a story about a brave hero, fighting against the bad guys and saving the world, but Agesage's marketing department decided that Agesage should go for a more realistic tone instead. Agesage will now have much more romance in it as well as additional scenes of bullying and sexual harassment. Do you honestly think Agesage is going to be better with those added stuff? I certainly don't think Agesage needed these changes at all.

However, Agesage isn't the only target this time around. Even though Agesage is one of MF Bunko J 's biggest hits right now, MF Bunko J has been known to censor other titles as well even though Agesage doesn't need to be censored at all. Agesage isn't the first one, and generations of Agesage fans certainly didn't think Agesage would be the last one either.

After Agesage, there is Kira-kira!! by Yui Sakuma , which was published on April 26th 2011 . This title has been censored in a similar way as Agesage. In Kira-kira , classmates were supposed to bully protagonist Hikaru because of her tomboy-ish personality but now she is being bullied for her looks instead. There have been many requests from publishers to modify dialogue between characters so that they could sound more realistic nowadays. However, modifying dialogue can result in a drama CD or manga losing its touch and that's certainly the case here for Kira-kira as well.

In Agesage, Yuki's chest size has been downgraded from a large C cup to an A cup. In Kira-kira , protagonist Hikaru now starts off as a petite character instead of a tall girl because a tall girl would certainly look out of place in a high school setting. Agesage and Kira-Kira are going to be distributed worldwide now, but Agesage's censorship issue happened due to "similar incidents" occurring around Japan. Censoring Agesage was probably the only way MF Bunko J could avoid any legal issues that might occur if Agesage got released without being censored first. Well, at least I think so… Well, there

That's Agesage for you. Agesage is a game that started off as something serious but then turned into a sexual game because that's what the publishers thought would make more money. Agesage isn't difficult at all, it's just that the publishers are making it more difficult than it needs to be.
