Is It Okay to Leave Air in a Compressor

There is a common question that floats among air compressor users: Is it okay to leave air in a compressor? The answer: It depends. Unfortunately, the question is not quite as simple as it seems, and it’s important to understand some basics about air compressors in order to answer it.

How Air Compressors Work

Air compressors fill with the same air we are surrounded by each day, which contains water vapor. While in operation, the compressor pressurizes the air. The process presses that water vapor out of the air and sinks to the bottom of the compressor.

Unfortunately, as the water sits there, it begins to corrode the bottom of the tank. Over time, that rust and corrosion eat away at the tank. It can cause the tank to leak and – in extreme cases – even cause an explosion. As neither of those scenarios is a good option, it’s important that the water be drained regularly.

How Often Does It Need to Be Drained?

The good news is that if you use your air compressor regularly, you don’t necessarily have to drain it after each use. However, if you will not be using it for a bit, you should drain it before leaving it idle.

For example, if you use your rotary screw air compressor in the morning and will be using it again that afternoon, you don’t have to drain it between uses. If, however, you use it today but will not be using it for a week or more, you should drain it once you’re done for the day.

Many experts suggest draining your compressor at least once a week if you use it every day. Others suggest draining it at the end of each day or at least every couple of days. Which of these is accurate?

The truth is that there is no “right” schedule for every person and every tank. However, you’ll likely find a recommendation in your air compressor’s instruction manual.

The main point is that you drain it regularly as this not only keeps you safe but also prolongs the life of your compressor. The more often you can drain it, the better the results.

Back to the original question: Is it okay to leave air in a compressor? Typically, yes, but it’s not recommended. Under most circumstances, it is best to drain your compressor every one to two days when it’s in use and prior to leaving it idle for prolonged periods.
