Get Somewhere Safe
First, check that everyone is ok. If there are major emergencies (such as serious injuries or wrecked vehicles), call 911 right away.
Otherwise, move your cars somewhere safe, such as the shoulder. Make sure you put on your emergency lights to avoid another car accident.
Document the Damage and Exchange Information
Take as many pictures of the scene as you can. This includes photos of the road, the cars (specifically, the damage on them), and injuries.
You should also exchange information with all the involved drivers, as well as any witnesses if applicable. The information you gather should include:
- Full names
- Phone numbers
- Addresses
- Car insurance information (provider and policy number)
File a Police Report
If you needed to call 911, then the police and ambulance will arrive. They'll automatically take down information and file a report, so you won't have to do anything in this case, besides request a copy.
Otherwise, you'll need to go to the station to file a report yourself. It's always a good idea to have a police report, not just for your insurance claim, but also to follow the law. In some states, you're legally required to file a police report if there's property damage over a certain amount.

You'll need to tell your insurance provider about the accident and all its details. You can then file a claim with the agent. Once it's processed and you pay the deductible, then you'll get money to make repairs to your car.
