Stephanopoulos was raised in Cleveland as the son of first-generation Greek-Americans, where he attended Columbia University before attending Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, earning a master's degree there. Stephanopoulos excelled at being ABC News' chief political correspondent and co-host of Good Morning America and This Week for decades, conducting hundreds of interviews with politicians while covering major stories around the world.

He's not the first journalist to take a tough line when interviewing, yet some observers have taken exception with his approach. They point to his White House experience under Clinton and assume he's coming in to save them with preapproved questions and edited answers; but network interviewers don't submit questions in advance, while their relationship is far more contentious with administrations than most outsiders might believe.
